Every autumn, we marvel the beauty of the fall colours: Red, orange and yellow
which like paints scatter on the canvas of nature. Where these colours come
from? Why they only appear in autumn?
During the summer and spring, the leaves are busy making food for the plants
through a process called photosynthesis. This food making process takes place
in the cell containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color. This
extraordinary chemical absorbs the energy from sunlight that is used in changing
carbon dioxide and water into glucose.
Along with green pigment are yellow to orange pigments. Most of the year these
colours are covered by green pigment. But in the fall, the chlorophyll breaks
down, the green colour disappears, and the yellow to orange colours underneath
become visible.
In autumn, red pigment is produced to recover nutrients in the leaves before they
fall. So, the leaves become red.
Most of the broad-leaved trees in the North shed their leaves in the fall. In the
South, where the winters are mild, some of the broad-leaved trees are evergreen:
that is, the leaves stay on the trees during winter and keep their green colour.
