                 C. Chinese New Year was coming. Cyric was reading an article about its traditions. Read
the passage carefully and answer the questions in complete sentences.

Chinese New Year is most important festival for the Chinese. It marks the
beginning of the traditional Chinese calendar. People believe that they should
remove the old and welcome the new. Besides, this festivity is the time for
                      family reunion.

When the festival is near, people completely clean the house. After the cleaning,
they decorate the house to welcome the New Year. They usually decorate their
houses with ‘Fai Chun’ which is a red strip of paper with a joyful, propitious or
inspiring message written on it. People put it on the wall or the door. They also
beautify their homes with flowers that signify prosperity and good luck.

Two weeks before Chinese New Year, people begin shopping. They buy a lot of
household accessories and food. They also prepare traditional Chinese food like
turnip cakes, sugar cane rice cakes and deep fried food.

The festival begins with New Year’s Eve dinner. It is the most important dinner
for the Chinese as it is the family reunion dinner, especially for those with
family members away from home. During the dinner, 8 to 10 dishes are served.
Several dishes such as fish and lettuce must be served as they have auspicious
meaning that expresses good fortune. Most Chinese have the reunion dinner at
home instead of in a restaurant.

During Chinese New Year, relatives and friends visit each other to express good
fortune and show respect. Married people have to give red packets to their
unmarried relatives or friends, hoping them to be blessed every year. The red
packet is a red envelope with money in it.

Although Chinese New Year may not be as important as it was in the past, it is
still celebrated as a great event. It’s not only a holiday for enjoyment. What’s
more? It is valuable for holding a family together.
