The Songkran festival
The Songkran festival is also known as the Thai New Year’s festival. The Thai New Year’s
Day is 13 April every year. The word “Songkran” comes from the Sanakrit word samkranti,
meaning change.
The Songkran celebration is rich with symbolic traditions. People visit local temples
and give food to the Buddhist monks. They also pour water on Buddha statues which means
to wash away one’s sins and bad luck.
As a festival of unity, people who have moved away usually return home. Pouring water
over the palms of elders’ hands in the family is a way to show respect to them.
Yet, the holiday is known for its water festival which is mostly celebrated by young people
and tourists. Major streets and closed for traffic and used as fields water fights. Participants
splash water on one another.
Khao Chae, a special cool-off dish eaten at the Thai New Year’s festival. It is rice in
jasmine water served with a tasty variety of seasoning. It is fresh and delicious.
The Thai New Year’s festival is entertaining and spirtual which you won’t want to
miss.
