London was the largest city in 1666. The streets were busy, narrow and dirty
throughout the day. Among the many thriving businesses in London was bakery. In
order to keep ovens at high temperature, the baker kept the large stocks of dry wood
in his kitchen.
One early morning in September, these stocks of wood caught fire. This was
discovered by the baker’s servants. The ground floor was alight and the flames
spread rapidly. The baker’s family escaped by climbing on to the roof and jumping
to the next house. Although everybody tried to put out the fire by splashing buckets
of water on it, the fire travelled down the whole lane. A strong easterly wind was
blowing and the fire moved west through the city.
The Lord Mayor of London was informed, who then organised the fire fighting
effort. Eventually, after raging on for three days, the fire fighting parties gradually
put out the fire. About four-fifths of the city was burnt and more than 10,000 people
had lost their homes. Fortunately, only nine people lost their lives.
