tale from the native people of North America of find out.
Once upon a time, the bear had a long, beautiful tail. He liked saying, ‘I have the most
beautiful tail of all!’ Therefore, the other animals didn’t like him.
One winter’s day, the bear went to the lake. It was very cold and the lake was covered
with ice. A fox was sitting on the ice. He had a lot of fish.
‘Where did you get those fish?’ asked the bear.
The fox pointed to a hole in the ice. ‘I put my tail in there. The fish bit my tail and I
pulled them out of the water. ‘Actually, the fox stole the fish from a fisherman.
The bear put his tail into the hole. ‘I can feel the fish biting my tail!’ he said.
‘Good!’ said the fox. ‘If your tail hurts a lot, it means you have a lot of fish.’ Then the
fox went home.
The bear’s tail hurt. However, he wanted more fish, so he waited and waited. Eventually,
he fell asleep.
The next morning, the fox went to the lake. The bear was still there. The fox shouted,
‘Bear, wake up!’
The bear jumped up. CRACK! He looked down. His long, beautiful tail was in the ice.
Now he just had a short tail. ‘Boo hoo hoo! My beautiful tail!’ said the bear. The fox
ran away, laughing.
